Rajasthan Medical Colleges to produce more MBBS, increases seats in medical colleges

Jaipur: There is some good news for students aspiring to become doctors. Two medical colleges of state have increased 100 seats from the new academic session while chances are the number may increase further.

During a recent inspection of various medical colleges, Medical Council of India (MCI) officials found that the number of seats has been increased from 100 to 150 in Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Ajmer, while Jaipur-based Mahatma Gandhi Medical College will also get 50 more seats, taking it to 150 seats.

Moreover, MCI also recommended to continue the recognition of these private colleges.

“The students will benefit from the increased seats from the academic session starting from July as we will take 150 students from this year,” confirmed Dr Pramod Kumar Saraswat, principal, JNMC, Ajmer.

The revelation was made in the minutes of the recent meeting released by MCI. However, the MCI pointed out that during the inspection it had found a few deficiencies in the colleges.

Meanwhile, sources said there may be a further increase of about 100 seats in the state’s premier SMS Medical College as the decision to increase the number of seats in SMSMC is pending with the governing council.

Currently, there are 150 seats and there is a proposal to take the number to 250 seats.

“The proposal to increase the seats in the SMS Medical College is pending with the governing council,” said a senior government official.

In this scenario, Jaipur’s SMS Medical College will take 150 students a year, while the two private colleges — Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and National Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (NIMS) — induct 150 candidates each. This makes it to about 450 MBBS doctors who pass out every year from Jaipur.

NEET UG 2013: No clarity on NRI admissions

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) Under Graduate 2013 for MBBS and BDS courses does not have clear instructions for the admission of Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students.

While 15 per cent of the total seats in private medical and dental colleges are reserved under the NRI quota, sources from the Directorate of Medical Education said so far they do not know the number of seats allocated for each state or the modality of admissions.

“The number of seats for any state or the number of seats in the NRI quota has not been announced by the Central government for both under and postgraduate medical courses. The case challenging NEET 2013 both UG and PG is still pending in the Supreme Court and the verdict is awaited,” sources said. Till date, the admission process has been based on the marks obtained in the entrance test conducted by the college managements. However, as per the SC order, results of various entrance tests have to be withheld until further instructions.

All the organisations have conducted entrance tests like the Common Entrance Test, Consortium of Medical Engineering and Dental colleges, individual deemed universities entrance tests and Karnataka Linguistic Minority Religion Professional Colleges Association, for admission to professional courses.

Each year, nearly 2,000 students of Indian origin claim seats in the NRI quota. However, the delay in the announcement of order has left medical and dental aspirants in the lurch.

Karnataka has been the destination for many students aspiring to pursue medical education due to the affordable fees and availability of seats in the NRI quota of private medical colleges.

AS Shrikant, executive director, Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka said: “Admissions for NRI students will be as per the previous year’s rules and students can seek admissions based on the results of entrance test and merit.

“The applications have to be submitted online and based on merit, students can secure admissions. There will be no change in the procedures.”

No MBBS admission list yet from private colleges

KOCHI: Almost a month after the closing of MBBS admissions to self-financing medical colleges, only four colleges have submitted the complete list of students they have admitted in the 35% management quota seats to the admission supervisory committee (ASC).

The ASC is now planning to get the admission list from the university and check if the students admitted in the management quota are from the merit list prepared by them. Of the eight self-financing medical colleges, only the Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Ernakulam; Travancore Medical College, Kollam; MES Medical College, Palachode, Perintalmanna; and DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences have submitted the list to the ASC. The admissions were completed on September 30.

"We are in the process of studying the list submitted by the four colleges and have also called for the list submitted by the colleges to the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) to compare," said ASC chairman Justice J M James.

As the self-financing colleges are affiliated to KUHS, they have to submit the list of students in their rolls to the university for registration. "The students can write the exam only after their names are registered with the university," an ASC source said.

The ASC had, in September, asked the self-financing medical colleges to provide a list of all students admitted under various categories -- general category, management quota (35%) and NRI quota (15%). This was done after it came to the ASC's notice that some students admitted under the management quota were from outside the list of qualified candidates prepared by the committee.

On scrutiny, it was found that MES Medical College and Gokulam Medical College had admitted three unqualified candidates each and the KMCT Medical College, 12 such candidates. The committee also found that the list furnished by five other medical colleges was incomplete.

The committee had then nullified the admissions of candidates whose names did not figure in the list of 408 qualified candidates prepared by them.

NRI quota seats diverted for local students

HYDERABAD: A crackdown on medical seats sold secretly for a hefty sum and the judiciary urging the government to ensure fair play notwithstanding, seats under the NRI quota are being fast diverted for local students, sources said.

This year, the state government introduced reservation of 15% seats for NRI children who are keen to study in Andhra Pradesh from the 1200-odd medical seats that are on offer under the management quota.

 But sadly, brokers in the city are now openly offering NRI seats after regular management quota seats sold like hot cakes for Rs 45 lakh-Rs 1.2 crore by end of June.

"Seats are fast filling up and if you want a medical seat, it has to be from the NRI quota,?" TS Rao, allegedly a broker, who is trying to woo students through advertisements in regional newspapers, told a TOI correspondent on Friday.

When this correspondent told Rao that she is ready to pay money for a medical seat under NRI quota and a Hyderabad college was preffered, Rao said: "No seats in Hyderabad colleges are available, but for Rs 5.5 lakh as fee for the course and Rs 40 lakh donation, the NRI quota seat is yours outside the city."

As per rules, only biological parents or legal guardians who are NRIs can sponsor a candidate under the NRI quota.

When the broker heard that this correspondent, who was feigning as a desperate aspirant, was willing to dish out any sum for a medical seat, Rao said he could arrange sponsorship.

"It won't be a problem, once you have the money ready we will get you a NRI sponsor on paper as well,"? he added, before he hung up.

Sources in the education department said some college managements easily find sponsors residing abroad for such candidates and collect hefty capitation fee through the brokers.

"These sponsors are shown as the candidate's uncle or aunt or a guardian,"? a senior official in the department said on conditions of anonymity.

"The racket of selling seats has been going on in Hyderabad for a while. But this year, they did not spare the NRI quota also it seems."?

Officials said despite stipulations in a recently-issued GO announcing NRI quota asonly children/wards of NRIs? are allotted these seats, several college managements have managed to subvert the system by admitting local candidates under the NRI quota.

Some experts said introduction of NRI quota seemed to be a tacit understanding between the state government that did not want to jack up the fee and the medical college managements who were demanding a steep hike.

 "Managements were demanding a substantial increase in the fee structure which the government was not willing to do. Keeping elections in mind, the NRI quota was created so that colleges could make some money,"? said Dr A Y Chary, former director of Medical Education.

The AP Private Medical and Dental Colleges Managements Association (APMDCMA) said if the government had introduced a uniform fee structure for all the students, the corrupt practice could have been stopped.

"But the government has not touched the fee structure this year. While old colleges wanted to fix the fee for each candidate as Rs 6-7 lakh, new colleges had given a proposal for Rs 14-15 lakh per student,"? said Dr G Bhaskar Rao, treasurer of APMDCMA.

Rs. 5000/- for General and OBC candidates and Rs. 2500/- for SC / ST candidates.

How to Apply: Candidates have to Apply Online on www.ruhsraj.org. After filling the first part of the online application form applicant can download bank challan and deposit application fee at any of the branches at Oriental Bank of Commerce.
